Rio Ferdinand reveals he turned to alcohol to get through the grief of loosing his wife to breast cancer in 2015

In a soon to be aired BBC documentary, Rio Ferdinand: Being Mum And Dad, the former England footballer and ex-Manchester United defender revealed that he turned to alcohol following the death of his wife Rebecca in March 2015, after experiencing guilt that she died and not him.
Breaking down while filming, Ferdinand said he started drinking in the middle of the night to get through the grief of losing her to breast cancer.
The 38-year-old who is now a single-parent to their three children Lorenz, 10, Tate, eight, and Tia, five, met Rebecca when he was just 21 and they got married in 2009 on Peter Island, after he proposed during a trip to Las Vegas in 2007, a year after their eldest Lorenz's birth.

'At the beginning I was drinking a lot at night time. We have a lady lucky enough who lives with us, she would go to bed and I'd come back down in the middle of the night and probably drink a lot for the first three or four months. But I would get up and do the school run and stuff.'
Ferdinand said he can now sympathise with people who go to 'dark places' following trauma and grief. He insisted that it was the people who he surrounded himself with that gave him the drive to succeed for his children.

'That's why a network of people around you is so important. And I was fortunate to have that and also having my kids as inspiration to make sure I get up and do things and try and make things work. Some people aren't afforded that, some people haven't got that, and that's when I started to become a bit more sympathetic when people do go to places that are dark places.'

He added: 'I used to look at people or read stories and think, how can you be so selfish and commit suicide or attempt to commit suicide or whatever. But I can actually sympathise now because I understand that you get to places where you think, if I didn't have that network of people or my kids who I use as an inspiration to be able to get up and think straight, I can understand that.'

Federer beats Wawrinka to win 5th title at BNP Paribas Open

Australian Open champion Roger Federer beat Stan Wawrinka 6-4 7-5 in an all-Swiss final on Sunday to win the BNP Paribas Open — his fifth Indian Wells triumph.

World number 10 Federer claimed the first set before being broken for the first time at this year’s tournament in the first game of the second set.

Wawrinka, the world number three, went 2-0 ahead before Federer won three games in a row on his way to the title.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Elena Vesnina had earlier beaten Svetlana Kuznetsova 6-7 (6-8) 7-5 6-4 in the women’s final.

Federer becomes the oldest champion in the tournament’s history, surpassing Jimmy Connors, who was 31 when he triumphed in 1984.

This was the 23rd meeting between Federer, an 18-time Grand Slam winner, and Wawrinka.

The 35-year-old Federer has now beaten his compatriot, who was in tears at the end, 20 times.

“This has been a fairy tale week,’’ said Federer. “It’s a beautiful feeling. Maybe it’s not as surprising as Australia but it’s still great to back it up by winning in Amercia.

“It’s a dream start to the year. I have totally exceeded my expectations. It’s been an unbelievable start to the year.’’

The women’s final lasted just over three hours as Vesnina came back from the dead to secure the biggest title of her career.

Eighth seed Kuznetsova edged a marathon first set lasting 71 minutes by winning a tie-break.

Vesnina, the 14th seed, trailed 4-1 in the second set before winning four games in a row to force a deciding set.(NAN)

United punish struggling Boro

Manchester United moved into fifth place in the Premier League on Sunday with a 3-1 victory away to struggling Middlesbrough, who sacked manager Aitor Karanka on Thursday.

Jose Mourinho had said his team would “probably lose” because their current fixture congestion would lead to fatigue, but despite missing Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Paul Pogba, Wayne Rooney and Ander Herrera, they counter-attacked well.

Belgium international Marouane Fellaini headed them in front after almost half an hour’s play for his first league goal of the season and Jesse Lingard scored the second just after the hour mark from 20 metres.

Boro’ substitute Rudy Gestede pulled a goal back with 12 minutes left, but in added time goalkeeper Victor Valdes slipped, allowing Antonio Valencia to score a third United goal.

Middlesbrough, by far the lowest scoring team in the league, have still not won a league game in 2017.

3 years after, Barcelona coach, Luis Enrique announces his departure from the club

Barcelona coach, Luis Enrique will step down at the end of the season, saying he needs to "rest". The 46-year-old, in his third season in charge of Barca, was speaking after their 6-1 win over Sporting Gijon. In his previous two seasons with the club, e won the Champions League as part of the treble in his first year and led them to a domestic double last season.

"It is a difficult, measured and well thought-out decision and I think I have to be loyal to what I think. I would like to thank the club for the confidence they have shown in me. It's been three unforgettable years. It's about how I live with my profession, with a never-ending quest for solutions and to improve my team. That means I have very little time to rest, very few hours to disconnect.

I think it will be good for me at the end of the season, because I need to rest. That's the principle motive. The most important thing is we have three exciting months left in all three competitions. In one of them, we are in a difficult situation but if the stars align, we will have a chance to turn it around", said Enrique.

Wonders! Football supporter says Manchester United striker is her 'God' (photo)

A female Manchester United fan has taken spiritual matters to a new height as she inscribed on her shirt that club striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic is her god.

The message on the shirt asked a further question if she could be the girlfriend of the Red Devils’ defender Phil Jones.

“ZLATAN U R MY GOD! P.JONES CAN I BE UR GIRLFRIEND” she customized on her United jersey.

This is coming barely 48 hours Swedish supporters responded to Donald Trump’s travel claims that the country is having problems. They protested in a video that they do not have a god, but they have Zlatan.

"In Sweden, we don't have god. We have Zlatan. He is huge,” the protesters said in a video.

The Scandinavian country cleared the air to comments which the United States president may have been referring to, and educated him on their top religion.

LUIS ENRIQUE SET TO DITCH 4-3-3 IN BARCELONA TACTICAL REVOLUTION

The Barca boss is contemplating a formation change following his side's disastrous defeat in Paris last week, as a La Liga clash with Atletico looms.

Barcelona boss Luis Enrique is considering a change in the Catalans’ traditional 4-3-3 formation after recent poor performances against Paris Saint-Germain and Leganes.

After the humiliating 4-0 loss at the Parc des Princes last Tuesday, Luis Enrique was involved in a heated exchange with TV3 journalist Jordi Grau in the flash interview following the match and when he was asked why he had not made changes earlier, he said: “Obviously you weren’t watching very closely because we changed from 4-3-3 to 4-2-3-1 in the second half.”

However, there was scant evidence of the tactical tweak as PSG continued to dominate the match and went on to score two more goals. And against struggling Leganes at home in La Liga on Sunday, there was little improvement as Barca needed a late Lionel Messi penalty to win the match 2-1 in the last minute.

In light of those two poor performances, Luis Enrique is now contemplating a change in tactics as he digs deep into his memory bank for inspiration.

Unlike Pep Guardiola, the Asturian never featured for Barca under Johan Cruyff in the Dutchman’s 3-4-3 system, which the Catalan coach later used to surprise his rivals in important matches. Although Luis Enrique was brought to Camp Nou on the recommendation of Cruyff, the Oranje icon had already left by the time he arrived and it was as part of Bobby Robson’s team that the current Barca boss made his debut for the Blaugrana.

That was in a 4-2-3-1 formation with the Brazilian Ronaldo as the focal point in attack in a team that missed out on La Liga but went on to win three trophies: a Spanish Supercopa, a Copa del Rey and a European Cup Winners’ Cup, beating PSG in the final.

The idea of the system this time would be to use Luis Suarez as the lone striker, with Neymar, Andres Iniesta and Messi (in a free role) behind the Uruguayan. Further back, Sergio Busquets and Ivan Rakitic (or Andre Gomes) would form a two-man shield for the defence, which would stay as it is now (although Javier Mascherano could return alongside Gerard Pique in the centre). Aleix Vidal, out for the season with a serious ankle injury, would have been ideal for the formation as it allows more freedom for the full-backs to get forward.

Before Barca can think about the return leg against PSG, however, there is an important Primera Division match on Sunday away to Atletico Madrid at the Vicente Calderon, the scene of the Catalans’ European exit last season.

It will be the last time Barca play Atletico at the stadium, which will be knocked down later this year as the Rojiblancos move to a new home, and it will be a good opportunity for the Blaugrana to find their feet with an improved performance - perhaps even one that will help the team believe in a historic turnaround against PSG.

“I can’t talk about a comeback right now,” a crestfallen Iniesta said in the mixed zone at the Parc des Princes. Busquets, meanwhile, was more critical and admitted that “we were overcome tactically” by Unai Emery’s side.

That paved the way for a rethink ahead of the second leg on March 8 and only Suarez has spoken of a “remontada” since the defeat in Paris. In order to achieve it, however, Barca will need not only a result but also a much better performance in the game at Camp Nou - be it with 4-3-3 or 4-2-3-1.
